St John’s Chambers are looking to recruit top quality pupils to commence their pupillage on 1 October 2020. If you are looking for a first class pupillage that will give you the best possible springboard for your career at the Bar, St John’s Chambers is the right place to be.

St John’s Chambers is one of the largest and most prestigious barristers’ sets in the South West, with ten silks and 76 juniors attracting high-quality work in all major areas of civil law. We were recently voted ‘Chambers of the Year 2018‘ by Bristol Law Society and ‘Regional Set of the Year 2018’ by Legal 500: these awards endorse our position as a stand-out national set. Read more here.

Recruitment for 2020 will focus on chancery & commercial, family and personal injury/clinical negligence, although we will – in exceptional circumstances – consider candidates who wish to practise in other areas.

The Pupillage Gateway, which is provided for the Bar Council by a third party and which was due to close at 11am on Thursday 7 February 2019, saw a high level of applications. Unfortunately, as a result of several IT issues including some corrupt user accounts, the online application system caused delays for many using the system. Because of the delays being drawn to the attention of the Bar Council the deadline for applications was extended until 13.30 on Thursday 7 February 2019. However, after listening to the concerns of those affected and in the interests of fairness, the Bar Council has looked again at this issue. The Bar Council decided to extend the Pupillage Gateway deadline until 11am on Monday 11 February 2019. The Bar Council is sorry for any inconvenience caused to any applicant or any chambers using the Gateway. We will be asking our third party supplier for an explanation as to why the problem occurred and will be looking for an assurance that nothing of this nature will ever happen again.

In light of this St John’s Chambers, has also extended its deadline to 11am on Monday 11 February 2019; please refer to the ‘Guidance Notes and Important Information document’ here on how to apply.

Should you have any general enquiries about pupillage, please contact our Office Manager, Isabelle Mills.
